We made it to the Dominican! The flights were long and crammed, but we made it all in one piece. One of the guys in our group Jaxon got his carry-on bag taken by somebody else, so we had to wait a while at the airport but they found his bag and everything was taken care of. I sat next to Jessica our trip leader on both flights and learned a lot more about her and her involvement in Rural Health Scholars.
Upon arriving in the Dominican, a group from Solid Rock International was waiting to receive us. We waited for the Michigan State University group, and then drove 2 ½ hours to the first guesthouse (lighthouse) in Los Alcarrizos. The representatives from Solid Rock International gave us some background about the organization and what our itinerary would be like for the rest of the week. We had a fantastic meal of rice, beef, avocados, and lettuce. Afterwards we swam, drank hot chocolate, and played pool, ping pong, and foosball.
The Michigan State group is a little rowdy. We’re going to be working separately though. I’m really excited to work with SRI and I think this will be a fun trip!
